5th day of Support Team Module

19th February 2014

We were engaged to a project on Operational Plan.  Consisting of 5 members, Andrew led our team.  Jacqueline did the presentation.  Sulimah & Anita contributed information & ideas as well as vetting the presentation.  I worked on the design of the project.  It was a well-spent 60 minutes of teamwork.

'Spearhead the straw sculpture business in the Southeast vision', that's the project guide. We were needed to innovate our products. To decide on the 3 core values in relation to the vision. We were to come up with a project name. It was an Entertainment sculpture. For that Andrew decided the sculpture based on the Music Awards.

We learned how to delegate jobs accordingly following the competency matrix & RASCI table.  We brainstormed about the outlook of the design.  We penetrated our ideas into the summarised presentation. To gauge our operational plan systematically. To decide on time-frame (timeline). What resources needed to prepare; for example the straw, people, equipment and training.  The end result was the 'Deliverables', which was the award.

4th day of Support Team Module

13th February 2014

IQ secure you a job, EQ ensure you promotion.  I realised the spontaneous effect of human nature to react according to the function of the brain.  If what Mr Jamali said was true, being a person more towards EQ, one day I will just get a promotion.  I believe that is possible provided I work hard & work smart.

A leader should have spirit of 'cameraderie' within herself.  To leverage, take advantage of others trends to be better & learn from them.  A good leader shouldn't be vulnerable in front of her team members.  Be the change that you want.

When you see weaknesses in a person, coaching is possible.  Coaching is a skill with very limited knowledge.  When you are a mentor, your mentee will tend to emulate you.  When you idolize someone, you may know the person but the person you idolize do not even know you.

I found out about the 'Sandwich Technique'.  To have feedback with someone pertaining certain issue which needs to be resolved; the first step is to start with good points; secondly is to touch on areas of improvement; finally finish-off with good points.  This method is useful because it helps to massage a person's ego.  Another name for this method is 'SOI Technique'.  Firstly look into 'Situation' and discuss.  Then touch on 'Observation', how reliable the person having feedback.  Lastly, on 'Improvement'.

3rd day of Support Team Module

12th February 2014

"Structure provides ease of control..."  I agree.  I don't have to look far, Singapore is an exemplary of a structured government.  We are very fortunate to have peace & stability in our country.  Having a family involves structure.  Likewise at workplace, structure promotes efficiency.

I learned about the structure of project team.  Traditional / functional teams are stable & consistent over a period of time, Project teams are for specific tasks or projects, Cross-functional teams are created to make changes or improvements to process within the organisation & it involves members from different traditional teams.

Operational plans operate in the delegation of tasks.  Roles & responsibilities and Work Breakdowns contributes to fairness in distribution of jobs.  Delegation is to avoid over-loading of jobs to team members.  Competency matrix & RASCI table are necessary to review competency of individuals & determine roles & responsibilities for each team members.

I captured the fact that for Hygiene factors, the presence may not be motivating, but the absence may lead to complaints.  My work may seem simple to others & for that it seems nothing much, but a moment of carelessness or fail to comply may lead to long-winded interrogation by my boss.

2nd day of Support Team Module

6th February 2014

Reflecting on "Why is this important to me personally?  Why is it so to me as a working adult?"  It is my own views not other's.  This is where I know that I will not be pinned down to voice out my thoughts.  I want to bring myself to internalise what I received from the guidance of Sir Jamali Natijol.  It suddenly became so clear that I was moved to understand the incredible methodology of this module.

My company is a large organisation with more than 200 employees.  Coordinating in housekeeping department at Royal Plaza On Scotts Hotel has heightened my level of confidence.  I was given the flexibility of working hours, which accommodated me in the company pretty much longer than I expected.  With flexibility, I gained empowerment and am accountable for the duties at hand.  In my own personal space at work I am entitled to decision making.  I persevere to take charge in my responsibilities and deliver the best to my abilities.

I am not a manager but my job requires me to lead the staffs in a certain way.  I am bewildered to establish good rapport with peers.  My networking are wide, varying from internal & external sources.  I take pride in whatever I do.  I simply love to be motivated & motivate others around me as well.

Therefore, one need not have to be a manager to be a leader.  Through rational and emotional attributes, a leader should have the ability to touch the feelings of others by inspiring them to find purpose & courage.  We need to diversify our skills.  To embrace the differences among us.  After all, we are all human.

1st day of Support Team Module

5th February 2014

“We are victims of forms” as quoted by our trainer.  It is true. I agree hundred percent.  Everywhere we go, whatever we do, we are always required to fill in certain forms to qualify for a certain criteria.  As good citizens, we have always attempted to abide by the rules & regulations so as not to get ourselves into any kind of problems.  To our understanding, with penning down our particulars, things will be a lot easier for a follow-up.  I hope my elaboration on this make some sense.  Anyway, I still believe that with orders & control an objective can smoothly be achieved.

I was exhilarated upon refreshing my teaching days on the mind-mapping technique of learning.  Although the memory of it was more than ten years ago, image of the late Mr. Mansur Sukaimi partaking samples of mind-maps to us has been a great honor.  I can never forget the adventure he took us into letting our fingers flow, letting our minds free to create an effective mind-map.  The production of mind-map creates understanding of the topic we are touching on.  Therefore, usage of mind-mapping will remain relevant for a very long time.

Cracking our heads for a mere ten to fifteen minutes has gotten us produced a tree-image mind-map.  It was not judged on appearance but to promote awareness of the topics we need to cover for this module.  Anita, Sulimah and I have been in the same group since the first module (Develop Self) & we collaborated well in any assignments given.  We supported one another & enthusiastically contributed in decision making.  Remarkably, we have already projected our support as a team in building leadership qualities within ourselves.

We were given some insight into the overall topics through concept of mind-mapping.  Understood now that what we learn in ‘Develop Self’ was to realize the Competency Element:  Performance Criteria (What you must be able to do) & Underpinning Knowledge (What you need to know in order to perform).  As a working adult, I perceive clearly that I am required to equip myself potentially with the relevant knowledge in order to achieve a favorable working condition among team members.

I thrive to grasp well the topics on Support Team.  An overview of this module displayed that there are a total of three main components namely:  Conduct Team Planning Activities, Demonstrate Organizational Values & Build Support and Commitment within the team.  In this module, we acquire clarity on our Vision (Where you are heading/Farsighted) & our Mission (Milestones/Achievements) as well as our Core Values.

Can I climb up the ladder of success?  Can I impart the skills I mastered from this course towards the benefit of my company?  Can I practically apply my knowledge towards establishing well-balanced family life?  Yes I certainly can.  If God permits.  I am very happy, overjoyed, thankful that I get to sit with a group of friends studying, hunger for knowledge.  Thank you God, thank you teacher, thank you friends...
